A little bit of urban, a little bit of garden! Today we bring you the engagement session of Lisa and David around some of Sydney’s beautiful and iconic spaces. Lisa and David recently got married “up over” in the USA, but before the wedding, they wanted some photographs of them in their current home so they could share a little piece of Sydney with their wedding guests. Australia, after all, is where their love story began.

David is a true blue Aussie, and his lovely new bride is an Ozmerican. What is an Ozmerican you ask? Well, Jeff and I have met a fair few American expats since we moved to Sydney. Having grown weary of the term expatriate, Jeff one day proclaimed all American expats to be Ozmericans: Americans living in Oz. Get it?
Lisa came to Australia, like I did, nearly 10 years ago as a Study Abroad student in Brisbane. Lisa had heard the usual advice about how a semester abroad could be beneficial to her future, but little did she know just how much it would change her life! It wasn’t until the end of her time there, through a fateful enrolment in a particular class, that she happened to meet David. Lisa only had a couple of weeks left in her stay, but it was enough for love to take hold. Now she’s a full-fledged Ozmerican and handle a barbie as well as any Aussie. Good on ya Lizzaaah!

Lisa and David are total goofballs around one another! They are a classic case of opposite personalities attracting—their conversations often escalate into a comical banter, both poking fun at one another, and they usually have everyone around them cracking up as well. I don’t think we’ve been around these guys and not had a good laugh! I say the couple that laughs together, stays together. I can totally picture these guys at age 80, still taking the piss out of each other. (If you’re not versed in Aussie slang, don’t worry, it’s not as dirty as it sounds).

Lisa cracks me up. When I was taking this photo below, creeping around in the bushes, she said I was “like Gollum.” Haha! I think the Gollum technique paid off though—I do love this one! You can see below that Jeff promptly copied my angle!

Here’s the Gollum technique again…

If you know Sydney, you can see that we covered quite a big distance that afternoon. From Hyde Park to the Art Gallery of New South Wales…

…to the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Lisa and David warned us that they were going to be a challenge to photograph, insisting that they were clueless in front of the camera. They even suggested that we would have to do heaps of “photoshopping” on them to get decent looking pictures. But umm… I beg to differ! Lisa was looking gorgeous!

And David ain’t lookin so bad himself!

With a bit of patience, we had no trouble capturing some authentic intimate moments.

Love this one of the two of them.

Behold Lisa’s absolutely stunning engagement ring! David orchestrated a very complicated journey for this ring to travel from the USA to Australia, through the hands of a family member, travelling several thousand kilometres through two Australian states, just to surprise Lisa. And surprised she was!

And here is the very spot that David popped the question. Very classy David!

Of course we had to get a few snaps in front of the Sydney Opera House to show off to Lisa’s family and friends back in America:

We never tire of the way the setting sun lights up the harbour skyline.

It was the end of a beautiful afternoon, but just the start to a beautiful marriage. We’re so happy for you, Lisa and David! Congratulations!

Louisa Martin - I just love this photo shoot. You captured a lovely couple in some beautiful places! The Opera House is a perfect backdrop for grandeur, but you have also used the simple stone steps with the couple sitting above in a perfectly understated photo. I think you have captured the easy, unpretentious nature of this young couple in beautiful natural places. A good fit! Love it!
